FOOT CARE

Good hygiene must be of primary importance. This focuses on washing the feet thoroughly every day to remove dead skin and eliminate bacteria. The average foot gives off roughly half a cup of moisture a day. The skin becomes soft and soggy making it easier for friction to cause blisters, for chemicals to leak from shoes and cause contact dermatitis, and for athlete's foot and other forms of fungal infection to take hold.

The most common problem from all that moisture is bromhidrosis - smelly feet. This occurs because the foot's warmth and sweat provide choice growing conditions for bacteria. Good hygiene will help this by reducing perspiration. Feet must be kept warm and comfortable at all times. Changes in foot temperature can exacerbate health problems, a rapid drop in foot temperature will have an adverse effect on the reflexes and meridians and thereby the related organs.  Most adults have abused their feet mainly by wearing ill-fitting shoes.

The fact that no one has tow identical feet - one is always slightly larger than the other. High-heeled shoes affect body weight, balance and thereby the spine. Synthetic shoes should be avoided because they have no ventilation therefore, it increases the risk of fungal infection. Low-heeled, lightweight, leather or natural fiber shoes are the best. Choose your shoes carefully and remember your health depends on it.  Socks and stockings made of synthetic material should be avoided, they increase the likelihood of swearing. Choose 100 percent cotton or wool rather than nylon or mixtures of fibers.

FOOT CARE HINTS

  • Wash your feet carefully and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.

  • Allow your feet to "air out". Don't keep them locked up in shoes all the time.

  • Trim your toenails straight supple and powders on your feet to absorb extra moisture and prevent infection and odour.

  • Regular pedicures are beneficial

  • Regular washing and careful drying will help to prevent cracks from developing.

  • A pumice stone and creams will help soften hardened areas

  • Problems such as corns, plantar warts, and athlete's foot should be attended to and a Chiropodist consulted for persistent problems.

FOOD BATHS: Herbal foot baths can be an essential part of treatment, it is very effective because the healing ingredients rapidly penetrate the skin and sometimes reach the affected areas faster than if the same ingredients are taken internally. These baths can be prepared with dried herbs or aromatherapy oils infused in boiling water. Foot baths should be taken as hot as possible (although not boiling), first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and should not last for more than eight minutes.

CREAMS & OILS

A therapist may apply herbal ointment or oil to stimulate circulation and relax the client feet at the end of a treatment. It is a good idea to pamper your feet like this at regular intervals—either after a self-treatment or merely to relax and revitalize your feet. There are numerous foot creams on the market at present, but it is preferable to use something natural and herbal like aromatherapy oils or herbal creams since they contain beneficial healing properties.

EXERCISE:  Correct and regular foot exercise will not only keep the feet in good shape but can also combat deformities. Specific exercises are often prescribed by physiotherapists for chronic foot disorders with excellent results. There are some simple, easy exercises that can be done at home or the office, they will benefit the feet and should be practiced whenever the opportunity arises.  Walking is one of the best and simplest forms of exercise—walk barefoot as often as possible to allow your feet to recover from the confinement of shoes. A natural foot massage is by far the best and it more effective than any gadget. Barefoot walk on the beach, grass, or bare earth brings the feet into contact with the earth, and the energies that flow through it to provide a revitalizing, energizing and natural massage.

  • Rotate the foot to limber it up.
  • To tone up ligaments and tendons, pick up marbles with the toes.
  • To strengthen the arches, stand with your feet flat on the floor and curl the toes under

OTHER FOOT AIDS: There are numerous ‘Foot aids’ on the market: reflexology mats: wood or plastic rollers; brushes and electrically operated gadgets and many type of balls. These help tone and relax the foot as well as increase lymphatic drainage and circulation but must stress they should be used in moderation to prevent over stimulation. They are effective for health maintenance and not for treating specific problems.
